Q.

Could my contraception patch be causing my weight gain?

Hi, I was using the contraceptive patch for around a year and 4 months ago I stopped. Since then I have put on about 1lb a week (currently about 21lbs). I have not altered my diet (in fact have been eating slightly less chocolate, cakes, crisps etc.). I also feel that I am a bit more active - being off work for the school holidays I have been doing more housework, decorating, walking etc. I have also started running, have ran 1.4km twice and built up to 2.8km quickly. I know that this will take a few weeks to kick in.
The question is whether the change in contraception could be related to this odd weight gain (I'm def not pregnant). If so could this indicate an underlying issue?
I'm not sure if this is a nutritional or exercise question so am posting in both. Thanks

Our expert says...

Hi, thanks for your query.

Usually, you would expect going on a contraceptive to be the thing that causes you to gain weight rather than coming off it, but every one is different and it's not impossible that you actually LOST weight whilst first using the contraceptive patch and that you are now stabilising again.

If you are strictly keeping to your calories and doing the exercise you say you are, you should be technically losing weight and 21 pounds is a lot to have gained (though its worth keeping body measurements too in case you are gaining muscle which weighs more than fat). If this continues and you?re a absolutely sure you are keeping to your calories (it pays to weigh and measure everything to be sure) I?d schedule in a visit to your GP to see what might be going on.

Best wishes

Angela
